After a year of planning with ITDP, Mexico City launched its first public bike share program, Ecobici, in February 2010. The system, which features 1,114 bikes and 85 stations, is part of the new Bicycle Mobility Strategy of Mexico City, which seeks to raise the number of cyclists in the city from one to five percent by 2012. The Ecobici program will be followed by supplementary initiatives dedicated to the reclamation of public space for pedestrian use and the integration of Ecobici with the public transport infrastructure. In addition to the new bicycle share program, ITDP developed a bicycle and non-motorized transport masterplan for the city, which is currently being constructed.
ITDP continues to provide support for Mexico City’s bus rapid transit, Metrobus. This work includes the optimization of routes within the three corridors and assistance in using the ITDP-developed traffic modeling tool to help prioritize the next corridors.
We have completed three pilot parking studies in Polanco, Roma-Condesa, and the historic center, as well as worked with the Chief of Police on the implementation of Mexico City’s first state-of-the-art parking meters. Currently, ITDP is reviewing the parking rules in the zoning laws governing new developments with the goal of switching the requirements from parking “minimums” to “maximums” in an effort to discourage car use and ownership.
The city has created a new agency to oversee the revitalization efforts of its historic center, with which ITDP now works closely. We helped to develop a plan for revitalization and traffic regulation within the zone. As part of this effort, ITDP coordinated a visit by Jan Gehl’s world-renowned firm to make a draft report on improving the urban design in several districts. In part due to these efforts, the historic center is already showing signs of economic revival.
