The 16-kilometer (10-mile) first phase of BRT, Macrobus, was inaugurated in March 2009 and ITDP assisted with the planning of a full 72-kilometer (44.7-mi) network, which was completed in 2012. Various visits from ITDP Board President and former Bogotá mayor, Enrique Peñalosa, solidified the necessary support for BRT from key decision makers, who also traveled to Bogotá to learn from TransMilenio’s success.
In recent years, ITDP has worked with city officials to develop a complete bicycle masterplan for the city, as well as oversee the detailed design and construction of the project. The result has been a dramatic increase in biking infrastructure and bike culture throughout the city. In late 2014, Guadalajara opened a new bike share system- only the second one in all of Mexico.
ITDP is also working on parking policy issues in Guadalajara in an effort to manage traffic demand.
