The most efficient, equitable, and climate-friendly solution for urban mobility.

Public transport is not just a convenience — it is a critical force that shapes the future of our cities. Well-designed systems are fast, reliable, comfortable, affordable, and above all, accessible. They unlock urban opportunities, connecting people to jobs, education, healthcare, and leisure. Yet, one of the most significant challenges today is prioritizing investment in public transport infrastructure. Leveraging new vehicle technologies is essential to create systems that are not only accessible but also energy-efficient and climate-friendly.

Safe, modern public transport offers a real alternative to private car ownership—a major driver of socioeconomic inequality and a leading contributor to climate change. Transportation is the fastest-growing source of global emissions and the largest single source of black carbon from gas and diesel engines, both of which severely impact respiratory health. Transitioning from single-occupancy vehicles to high-capacity, zero-emission transport corridors will dramatically reduce emissions, eliminate gridlock, and connect underserved communities to the opportunities they deserve.

At ITDP, our Public Transport work champions sustainable mobility as a cornerstone of livable cities. We work with governments and stakeholders to design integrated, high-quality networks that seamlessly connect with walking and cycling infrastructure. Drawing on decades of global expertise across our teams in East Africa, East and South Asia, and Latin and South America, we provide technical guidance, inspire best practices, and promote scalable solutions.

For nearly 40 years, ITDP has led research and developed standards for world-class bus-based public transport, particularly through Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems that have become a backbone for efficient, high-capacity mobility across the Global South. Our work empowers cities to meet growing demand, improve quality of life, and foster thriving urban environments. As urbanization accelerates, the need for sustainable transport is not optional — it is urgent. Investing in public transport today means building resilient, equitable, and climate-smart cities for tomorrow.
