Women and children face greater challenges in accessing work, educational, and leisure opportunities offered in the cities. To shed light on this issue and formulate gender-sensitive indicators, ITDP Brazil focused on Recife, the capital of Pernambuco State, in northeastern Brazil, to develop Women and Children’s Access to the City.   This report focuses on women, particularly those who are child caregivers, between the ages of 17 and 70, and live in low income areas.

To generate the report, focus group discussions were conducted leading to the understanding of both individual and collective experiences and indicators and recommendations were formulated for nine major thematic areas: walking and land use, cycling, road safety, public transport, housing and urban infrastructure, childcare, management and public policies, transport financing, and sexual violence and harassment.

Leticia Bortolon, coordinator of the report, highlights that “the consolidated perception in this segment of the population is that harassment is an inherent part of their urban experience. Therefore, we developed a group of indicators capable of monitoring policies and measures by the city in order to address gender violence in the transportation sector. Including them in mobility plans is a step that must be taken to transform our cities.
