Sustainable Transport Award
As the COVID-19 pandemic made crowded spaces dangerous and the outdoors safer, cities around the world encouraged biking as a COVID-safe mode of transport. They began or bolstered bike-sharing programs, built pop-up bike lanes, and improved road safety for cyclists. These emergency interventions accelerated what was already a growing focus in transport policy and infrastructure—centering cycling as an integral part of sustainable, equitable, and healthy transport.
In this Deep Dive Discussion, we will hear from Syrafrin Liputo, Head of Jakarta Transport Agency, Nicolás Estupiñan Alvarado, Secretary of Mobility of Bogotá, and Dagmawit Moges Bekele, Ethiopia’s Minister of Transport. Join us on December 1, 2021, as these transport leaders discuss how their city is transforming cycling, how cycling is transforming their cities, and what the future of cycling may look like.
Aswathy Dilip is the ITDP South Asia Director. With support from her smart and enthusiastic team, she works with the National, State and City governments; providing them technical assistance on sustainable and equitable urban mobility. Her most exciting work includes transforming congested roads into vibrant streets with space for all users, helping cities implement bold parking reforms, and building support for high-quality, sustainable mass transit. With a keen interest in citizen engagement, Aswathy has organised Car-Free Sundays, intersection design testing, as well as street and public space exhibitions. Currently, she leads the team working on preparation of Complete Streets toolkit for the National Smart City Mission. Dr. Syafrin Liputo, A.T.D., M.T., currently serves as the Head of DKI Jakarta’s Provincial Transportation agency. He began his career as a state civil apparatus (ASN) at the DKI Transportation agency, serving as head of the operations control division and head of the land transportation sector. He then worked at the Ministry of Transportation in the Greater Jakarta Transport Authority (BPTj) and then the Directorate General of Land Transportation. Before becoming Head of Jakarta’s Transport Agency, he led the Land Transportation Management Center for Region XIII of East Nusa Tenggara Province. Syafrin is a graduate of D3 Road Traffic (1993) and D4 Land Transportation (1998), and he holds a Master’s degree in industrial engineering (2003), and Doctoral degree in environmental science (2014).
Nicolás currently serves as the Director of the Directorate of Sectoral Analysis at CAF. Throughout his career, Nicolás has worked on enhancing the urban agenda, fostering sustainable mobility, reducing poverty, and fighting climate change. He has served in Colombia’s National Planning Department, as transport vice minister 2012–2014, and after as a Secretary of Mobility of Bogotá. He has also worked for the World Bank as a Junior Professional and previously for CAF as head of the Urban Transport Unit and Director of Sector Knowledge.
He has published several papers on urban transport affordability and the effects of urban form on travel patterns. He serves on two committees at the Transport Research Board, and is a member of the Michelin Stakeholder Committee.
Nicolás holds a BS in civil engineering (Universidad de los Andes) and a Master’s in urban planning (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill).
H.E. Dagmawit Moges Bekele was appointed as Minister of Transport and Logisitics of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in October 2018. Before her current post she has served as a Deputy Mayor and Communication’s Affairs bureau head of Addis Ababa City Government, Cabinet member of the City Government and Board Chairperson of Addis Ababa Mass Media Agency Board. H.E. Dagmawit Moges is a Cabinet member of FDRE and a Member of House of People’s Representatives of Ethiopia (HoPRE). She is a Board chairperson of Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA), Woldiya University and Ethiopian Postal Service Enterprise. She is also a Board member of Ethiopian Airlines, Ethiopian Petroleum Enterprise, Investment board member and Public Private Partnership (PPP) board member. She has an MA in Public Management and Policy (MPMP) and a BA in Public Administration and Development Management (PADM) from Addis Ababa University.
