Mobility’s Future is Fossil Fuel-Free

With your generous support, ITDP can continue to help cities achieve a fossil-free future. Donate today.

The catastrophic weather events of the past year demand that we grapple with the realities of an increasingly unpredictable global climate brought on by our ongoing dependence on fossil fuels. Category Four hurricanes in Florida and Nova Scotia, deadly floods in Pakistan, and historic heat waves in Europe are just some of the recent climate disasters that are the result of our continued dependence on harmful fossil fuels. This reliance not only threatens lives through climate change, it can also lead to economic volatility, energy insecurity, and geopolitical conflict.

As the fastest growing consumer of fossil fuels and fastest growing source of energy-related carbon emissions, the transportation sector needs to rapidly pivot to low- and zero-emission mobility instead of gas-guzzling cars. A future that is less dependent on fossil fuels is within reach, only if global cities adopt sustainable urban mobility solutions that encourage more public transit, cycling, and walking. In fact, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, cities can reduce transportation-related fuel consumption by nearly 25% through measures, policies, and infrastructure strategies that reduce car dependency.

YOUR SUPPORT IS CRITICAL IN ADVANCING A FUTURE FREE OF FOSSIL FUEL DEPENDENCE.

Zero Emission Transportation is The Future

Zero emission mobility, such as electric buses and electric bikes, are vital solutions towards a future less dependent on fossil fuels, especially as more electricity is generated by renewable sources like solar and wind. Shifting from a diesel to electric bus, for example, can reduce carbon emissions by up to 50 percent. Now, more than ever, our cities need your help to put more clean, electric mobility on the streets in order to achieve a fossil fuel-free future.

ITDP is supporting the electric mobility revolution in cities like Jinan, China, where we have helped introduce over 1,100 new e-buses and trolleybuses, setting an ambitious precedent for the region and the world. In cities like Chennai, India, ITDP is helping launch bikeshare systems that include electric bikes — a fast, convenient, and emission-free alternative to private cars.

THROUGH THEIR FORWARD-THINKING POLICIES, CITIES LIKE CHENNAI AND JINAN ARE EMBRACING CLEANER MOBILITY.

Growing Demand and Improving Clean Mobility in Africa

As cities rapidly grow across Africa, the time is now to build more extensive and accessible sustainable transport systems, or risk hurtling towards a future of gridlocked streets and ongoing fossil fuel reliance. Without changing this trajectory, the number of cars on the road in sub-Saharan Africa is currently predicted to skyrocket by over 130% by 2040.

To help stave off this future of fossil fuel dependency, ITDP is at the forefront of developing the first bus rapid transit (BRT) systems in major, influential cities like Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; Kampala, Uganda; Kumasi, Ghana; and Nairobi, Kenya that will provide a fast and efficient way for residents to move around their cities without gas-guzzling cars. In Kisumu, Kenya, where 53% of daily trips are made by foot, ITDP developed the ambitious Kisumu Sustainable Mobility Plan, which lays out key actions for improving and expanding walking and cycling infrastructure across Kenya’s third largest city.

TO HELP CITIES IN AFRICA PROMOTE LARGE SCALE SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY AND AVOID BEING TRAPPED IN THE FOSSIL FUEL CYCLE, WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT.

Creating Inclusive Cities

Even though more than half of all people with disabilities and over one billion children and their caregivers live in urban areas, conventional transportation planning throughout the world has long overlooked the needs of these vulnerable groups. And when public transportation fails to be inclusive and accessible for all, it leaves many individuals with no choice but to turn to private cars.

ITDP is a leading champion of inclusive design, spotlighting how cities can better incorporate gender and age needs and increase safety and comfort on public transport for all. For example, in Cairo, Egypt, an ITDP survey found that 62% of women had experienced physical harassment at some point while using public transit, and now ITDP is working with the city to ensure that transit planning addresses safety considerations of marginalized groups, like women and children.

When we make urban transportation clean, accessible, and inclusive, we take a major step closer to a future with less fossil fuels.
