Kenyan Minister Visits Latin America to Learn From BRT Experience

From July 27th – 30th 2009, a delegation from Nairobi, Kenya, visited both Colombia and Mexico to learn firsthand about the Bus Rapid Transit systems in the region. The national government in Kenya is seeking to develop sustainable modes of urban transportation.

With the support of ITDP’s field office in Bogotá, the delegation, led by the honorable Minister for Roads Franklin Bett, included public officials and representatives of the World Bank. The delegation visited both Bogotá‘s TransMilenio and Pereira’s Megabus BRT systems. Several meetings were held, including those with the Colombian Minister of Transport Andrés Uriel Gallego, Si99’s (TransMilenio’s Private Operator) manager Victor Raúl Martínez, Ms Mónica Vanegas (Manager of Megabus Pereira) and the Mayor of Pereira Israel Londoño. After three days in Colombia, the Minister expressed his positive impression about BRT systems and continued his trip on to Mexico City.
