First Set of TransMilenio Bi-articulated Buses Launched in Bogotá

On the morning of August 6th 2009, five new bi-articulated TransMilenio buses were introduced in Bogotá. The sleek yellow-red Volvo buses, run by the private operator Ciudad Móvil, are 27 meters long and 2.6 meters wide. They can carry 260 passengers at maximum capacity (191 standing, 69 seated, 14 of which are in preferential seating). The design and manufacturing of the vehicles was developed by Superpolo at a local factory in Colombia, while the chassis were imported from Europe.

With these buses in operation, passenger congestion at some stations located on the Auto Norte-Caracas corridor will be reduced, especially during peak hours when the demand goes up to 43,000 passengers per hour per direction. The bi-articulated buses will join the current fleet (1,100 articulated buses) and improve system operations. At the same time, expansion of TransMilenio is coming with the construction of the third phase.
