Press Release: Government of India Sanctions Phase 2 of Ahmedabad BRT

The trans-vision of Ahmedabad captioned as ‘Accessible Ahmedabad’ is becoming a reality with the sanction of Ahmedabad Phase-II BRT system (30.5 Km at a cost Rs. 488 crores)today,  by the Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India.  Today, Mr. I.P Gautam Municipal Commissioner Ahmedabad and his team presented the details of the project before the Central Sanctioning Committee of JnNURM Govt of India

This Rs. 488 Crores project of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation was recommended by the State level Committee of JnNURM under the chairmanship of Shri. Nitin Patel, Hon. Minister Urban Development, Govt of Gujarat on 28th May 2008. The project comprises of 30.5 kms of roadway added to 58.3 kms of phase-I network. The Detailed Project Report was prepared in consultation with CEPT, ITDP and LASA.

Now the BRT connects the industrial areas of Naroda, New Naroda,  Odhav, New Odhav,  commercial areas of SG Road, CG Road, Law Garden and Ellisbridge, recently added areas of AMC like ChndKheda and emerging developments in Bopal with the central city traversing through Astodia to Kalupur and Delhi Darwaja to Kalupur.

A special feature of the project includes an elevated BRT road from Prem Darwaja to New Cloth Market running in front of the Kalupur railway station. It is for the first time in the Country that an elevated BRT Road is sanctioned by the Govt. of India. The elevated road will move across the railway line to connect the Soni-ni-Chali on eastern side. The road will have special bus stations on the elevated corridor. There will be adequate number of elevators to go up to access the bus stops. Bus stop access to railway station will be through extensions of the existing Foot Over Bridges.

The system will have automatic ticketing and will be integrated with AMTS, BRTS-Feeder and the proposed regional rail system.  The sanctioned project will have 52 bus stops.  Overall, after phase 1 and 2, the system will have 5 terminals and depots and 10 interchange facilities.

Another feature of the system will be an onboard and off board ‘passenger information system’, which will give real time information on bus locations, frequency and routes.
