ITDP began work in Tanzania with the Access Africa Project project, which brought good quality bikes to health workers in Ghana, Namibia, and Senegal. In Dar es Salaam, where ITDP began working in 2002, ITDP helped to initiate a BRT system, Dar es Salaam Rapid Transit (DART). ITDP created the financial model and designed Phase One of the system, which will include bicycle lanes, sidewalks, and pedestrian crossings. ITDP continues to work in Dar es Salaam to transform the impacted minibus (“daladala”) operators to become formal operators of the BRT system.
Dar es Salaam
ITDP helped initiate a Bus Rapid Transit system plan in 2002. It will include high quality bicycle lanes, sidewalks and pedestrian crossings, improving safety and access for many residents of Dar es Salaam. The project has also elevated awareness about sustainable street design within Dar es Salaam’s government.
