Our WorkChina

ITDP has promoted bus rapid transit (BRT) and sustainable urban transport in China for a decade, and working from conceptual planning through to implementation and operation on the Guangzhou BRT, and also in Lanzhou, Huizhou, Wuhan, Harbin, and Fuzhou.

ITDP and the Guangzhou Municipal Engineering Design and Research Institute (GMEDRI) co-led the planning and design of the Guangzhou BRT, which opened in February 2010. The system breaks the mold of BRT in Asia, carrying as many passengers as comparable sized metro systems. See www.chinabrt.org for more information on this system.

ITDP is also working on non-motorized transport initiatives, with a focus on bike sharing, greenways, and bike network and facility planning. In coordination with the Guangzhou Public Bicycle Operation Management Company, ITDP works to promote the public bicycle system in Guangzhou. ITDP consults with Guangzhou Greenway Office and provides technical support to the Guangzhou greenway design.

ITDP is currently documenting best practices in urban development in the Pearl River Delta, with case study developments from Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Shenzhen. ITDP is also involved in a World Bank low-carbon city project in Wuhan, and are providing advice on low carbon development in Changsha and Lanzhou.

ITDP’s China office also works on parking policy and city center livability improvements and is developing walking tours in Guangzhou to promote non-motorized models of urban development.
