2013 Sustainable Transport Award: Nomination Form

Background

Since 2005, The Sustainable Transport Award has been given annually to a city or major jurisdiction that has had a profound, mitigating impact on climate change by enhancing the sustainability and livability of its community using innovative transportation strategies. These strategies should increase mobility for all residents, reduce transportation greenhouse and air pollution emissions, and improve safety and access for bicyclists and pedestrians.

The Sustainable Transport Award Committee, with ITDP as the secretariat, collects information, selects finalists, and votes on a winner and honorable mentions.

Nominations open on June 1, 2012, and close September 15, 2012. The Award will be presented at the Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting in Washington DC in mid-January, 2013. Delegations from winning cities are invited to receive their award in person.

Criteria

The Sustainable Transport Award is open to all cities and major jurisdictions. Successful nominees will be distinguished by their impact, innovation, and leadership in the transport sector.

In order to qualify for consideration, the city must have made significant progress in implementing sustainable transport measures during the past year. Preference will be given to candidates who have achieved three or more of the below:

  1. Improvements to public transportation
  2. Improvements to non-motorized travel
  3. Expansion or improvement to public space
  4. Implementation of travel demand management programs to reduce private car use
  5. Reduction of urban sprawl by linking transportation to development
  6. Reduction of transport related air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions

Examples of qualifying projects include, but are not limited to:

  • A safer streets program for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists, resulting in fewer road accidents and injuries.
  • A traffic reduction program to improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Improving the health of residents by increasing mobility options such as cycling and walking.
  • Achieving greater passenger satisfaction on public transportation by offering better alternatives or as illustrated in increased ridership.
  • Improving social equity as a direct impact and explicit goal of transportation projects.

Nomination Process

To nominate a city, please complete the form below in its entirety and submit electronically. The deadline for submissions of full nominations is September 15, 2012. Any nominations received after September 15th will not be considered.
