ITDP is helping develop a comprehensive bus rapid transit (BRT) plan that will link the two cities by providing technical assistance to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation and PMPML, the bus operator in the Pune region.
ITDP is assisting the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) and Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Maha Mandal Limited (PMPML) to launch a world-class BRT system. Efforts have been concentrated on ensuring that Pimpri-Chinchwad/Pune builds all components of a complete BRT system including median stations, level boarding, electronic pre-board ticketing, and passenger information. We have begun analyzing passenger demand data from the electronic ticketing machines as part of a route rationalization study for the full Pimpri-Chinchwad/Pune region. This will be supplemented by passenger and frequency-occupancy surveys to be conducted in 2010.
Based on ITDP recommendations, Pimpri-Chinchwad/Pune has agreed to adopt non-motorized-transport-friendly street sections for all future roadwork.
ITDP also advises PCMC on non-motorized transport facility design and parking policy. This new initiative seeks to spur the development of walkable neighborhoods through reforms in the planning process.
