In 2010, ITDP began initial work with the city of Pekanbaru, on the island of Sumatra, to improve their bus service, which is modeled after the TransJakarta BRT.
Located on the island of Sumatra, Pekanbaru is the capital city of the Province of Riau, and has a population of 850,000. In June 2009, Pekanbaru launched the TransMetro Pekanbaru BRT system. In April 2010, ITDP signed a MoU with the Pekanbaru Mayor to provide technical assistance on BRT and Pedestrian Improvement projects. As of April 2011, TransMetro Pekanbaru has 16.5km of service running on three corridors. It is planned to expand to 6 corridors by 2015.
