What We DoDelhi

In 2007, ITDP India submitted a petition to formally challenge a local court order to stop granting licenses for cycle rickshaws on Delhi roads while banning them entirely in certain areas. Banning rickshaws means that those trips would be replaced by motorized transport, increasing pollution and fuel consumption. Rickshaws are also an important component to the socio-economic system – providing jobs for lower income men, as well as providing a safe and low cost trip for women and children who may be harassed or feel unsafe on public transit.

In addition, ITDP has organized an advocacy campaign that has drawn critical media attention to the ban and mobilized support among cycle rickshaw operators, neighborhood business owners, and other critical stakeholders.

ITDP promotes cycling by holding promotional events and with the establishment of the Delhi Cycling Club.
