ITDP’s work in Argentina began in 2008 after a visit from Enrique Peñalosa, ITDP Board President and former mayor of Bogotá, Colombia, who helped to convince the city government administration to move forward with a bus rapid transit (BRT) system. ITDP has been involved at each stage of planning and design of the three planned BRT lines with the first corridor currently under construction.
ITDP provides support to Buenos Aires on its newly launched bicycle program, which involves the construction of an extensive 100-kilometer (62-mile) network of separated bike paths. Along with recommendations for bicycle parking in plazas, transit hubs, and public buildings, ITDP assists the city in tracking the success of the program with cyclist counts and analysis. Other non-motorized transport programs include bike-to-work initiatives and car-free streets.
