ITDP has worked in Tanzania for the past eight years. ITDP’s hallmark project in Tanzania has been the BRT project in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s commercial capital. The Dar es Salaam Rapid Transit (DART) BRT is slated to open in 2013 with groundbreaking to occur imminently.
ITDP also worked in Tanzania on the Access Africa Project, which brought new good quality bicycles in Ghana, Namibia, Senegal, Tanzania, and South Africa and worked with the private sector and service providers to distribute them. Currently we are still distributing bikes to worthwhile projects in Namibia, Tanzania and South Africa.
ITDP works in the following Tanzanian cities:
Dar es Salaam
ITDP helped initiate a Bus Rapid Transit system plan in 2002. After some delays the system is under construction and expected to be complete by 2013. It will include high quality bicycle lanes, sidewalks and pedestrian crossings, improving safety and access for many residents of Dar es Salaam. The project has also elevated awareness about sustainable street design within Dar es Salaam’s government.
