Colombia has proven to be an important pioneer in the development of sustainable and affordable mass transportation systems in the form of bus rapid transit (BRT) and is now a model for cities all over the world. Former mayor of Bogotá, Enrique Peñalosa, now serves as President of the Board of Directors of ITDP. We continue our commitment to promoting the good example of state-of-the-art BRT by bringing policy makers, government officials, NGO representatives, bicycle advocates, and students from every part of the globe to Bogotá to see TransMilenio and its operation system firsthand. ITDP also takes delegations to Pereira and Cali, two other Colombian cities where BRT systems are already operating.
As TransMilenio is currently under expansion, ITDP works to provide technical assistance on operations optimization given this growth. In addition, ITDP has worked on the development of the BRT system in Cartagena.
ITDP also works in Bogotá to promote cycling with initiatives like bike-to-work. We support local non-profit groups advocating for bike network expansion and cyclist safety.
