Our WorkBrazil

ITDP started work in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo in 2002 and expanded to the country’s third largest metropolis, Belo Horizonte, in 2009. About 20 percent of Brazil’s population resides in these three metropolitan areas alone. Working in partnership with the national Ministry of Cities, ITDP translated the Bus Rapid Transit Planning Guide into Portuguese in 2009 and distributed over 1,100 copies to cities with over 100,000 inhabitants and universities. This, coupled with the awarding of the 2016 Olympics to Rio, helped spur the federal government’s support for bus rapid transit (BRT). ITDP provides consultant services to various cities on BRT implementation, including operational planning, station design, and the possibility of obtaining carbon credits.

Bicycle master planning, developing non-motorized demonstration projects, and cycle integration with mass transit are also major components of ITDP’s work in Brazil. We work with the cities to promote cycling, as well as train municipal employees on planning for cyclists and pedestrians.

ITDP Brazil has recently expanded its focus to include travel demand management, including parking policy, transit oriented development and congestion pricing. It is working actively to influence policy through research, workshops and capacity building.

Rio de Janeiro
