At a ceremony on Saturday, January 27 led by Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso, the TransJakarta Bus Rapid Transit system launched four additional corridors. This brings its total to seven corridors and keeps pace with plans to expand to more than 120 kilometers (74.5 miles) by the end of this year – a mark that would make TransJakarta the world’s largest BRT system. Stations on the newly constructed corridors have been physically integrated with popular destinations like Ancol Park and the Cililitan Grocer Centre, making pedestrian access convenient to TransJakarta riders.
In his remarks, Governor Sutiyoso said that he would ensure that a total of 15 corridors would be built as reflected in the city’s Transportation Master Plan. He also described plans to begin implementing road pricing this year, which aims to reduce congestion on key travel corridors while raising financial resources for improving the quality of mass transportation services.
Among other enhancements being planned for TransJakarta: an all-purpose smart card for paying fares on the BRT and other transit systems; and longer, articulated buses and extended platform lengths on Corridor 1 that will reduce travel time for riders by allowing them to get on and off buses more quickly.
Based on the success of TransJakarta in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the United Nations Environment Programme selected ITDP to work with the Government of Jakarta on strengthening the system further over the next five years. The project will rely on the continued involvement of key stakeholders, including ITDP’s non-governmental partners Instran and Yayasan Pelangi Indonesia.
