Dar es Salaam Mayor Kleist Sykes, together with City Director Wilson Mukama, announced that the city will begin developing a new city-wide mobility blueprint. Speaking at a May 13 workshop organized by the Dar es Salaam City Council, Locomotives, the Association for the Advancement of Low Cost Mobility and ITDP, the Mayor said that the blueprint will include plans for a world-class Bus Rapid Transit system.
"The Dar es Salaam City Council is proud to be among the first cities in Africa to seriously start working on the transformation of its urban transport system through the Bus Rapid Transit Project,” said Mayor Sykes in his opening remarks. “This BRT Project, once completed, will go a long way in changing the face of our city. Apart from reducing the Greenhouse Gas negative effects on our people it will also improve on mobility within the city.”
The City Council anticipates that the first phase of its project will be planned, constructed, and operational by late 2005.
