Cartagena, a UNESCO World Heritage colonial city of more than 1 million inhabitants on Colombia’s northern coast, is currently developing TransCaribe, a bus rapid transit system that will extend almost 15 kilometers (9.3 miles).

Thanks to a Global Environmental Facility (GEF) grant through the United Nations Environment Programme, ITDP is supporting the TransCaribe project in four key aspects:

  • Operational design
  • Building local management capacity
  • Integrating pedestrian and bike access
  • Developing public campaigns to promote the system

Cartagena is one of six cities that form part of Colombia’s national BRT development program, which is building on the experience gained from Bogotá’s TransMilenio, widely recognized as the world’s premier system. TransCaribe is scheduled to begin operations in late 2008.
