In May 2006, an earthquake shook the Indonesian island of Java, near the city of Yogyakarta, killing thousands and leaving many homeless.
Disasters like the 2006 quake and the tsunami in 2004 prompted a widespread humanitarian response and the bicycle community rallied as well. With the assistance of ITDP and its Indonesian NGO partner Instran, Fuji and SE Bikes donated 100 mountain bikes to high school students, health workers and their families in Yogyakarta to help address their basic mobility needs during the recovery. Instran is providing basic cycling training and follow-up maintenance for the recipients.
“Our hearts go out to the families who have had to endure this devastation,” said Matteo Martignoni, ITDP Vice President, at a special ceremony held during the 2006 Better Air Quality conference in Yogyakarta.
“ ‘Terima kasih’ [thank you] to Fuji Bikes and TNT Logistics for helping to assist these families as they rebuild their lives.”
